Global Appeal Renews Two-State Solution Amid Middle East Tensions
Israeli and Palestinian civil society groups have implored global powers to not abandon the two-state solution amid ongoing conflict. Meeting in France, they highlighted ongoing threats and violence, urging quick action to maintain peace prospects in the Middle East, as tensions rise with expanded Israeli settlements.
On Friday in France, Israeli and Palestinian civil society groups appealed to the international community, urging against the abandonment of a two-state solution amidst the ongoing Middle East conflict. The gathering itself, characterized by a collective presence of foreign ministers, senior officials, and civil society groups, highlighted the continued urgency of Palestinian statehood.
The meeting marked the first anniversary of the U.N.-endorsed New York Declaration outlining a roadmap to Palestinian statehood. Nations such as France, Britain, and Canada have since recognized Palestinian statehood. 'We could find every reason to give up. But you are here! Your testimonies alone are grounds for hope and action,' said France's Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, addressing participants from both sides.
The conference concluded with a pressing "Call for Action," proposing a ceasefire, halting settlements, reconstruction of Gaza, governance reform, and bolstered international support. It comes against a backdrop of growing settler violence in the West Bank and controversial settlement expansions, particularly the E1 project, which jeopardizes the potential Palestinian state infrastructure.
