Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for September 21. His announcement came during a rally held in Gally on Saturday, where he confirmed that he had already placed his deposit, according to the Daily Mirror.

Wickremesinghe also took to social media platform X to share his decision, citing his love for Sri Lanka as the driving force behind his candidacy. He expressed his dedication to transforming Sri Lanka into a prosperous and thriving nation, urging citizens to support his campaign to secure a bright future for the country.

'With a clear vision and unwavering determination, I am proud to announce my candidacy for the upcoming presidential election,' Wickremesinghe stated. 'United with the strength and resilience of our people, we overcame financial ruin and restored normalcy. Now, it is imperative that we continue to advance our country's progress.'

The announcement follows the Election Commission's confirmation that presidential elections will take place on September 21, with nominations accepted from August 15. After being sworn in as the eighth President of Sri Lanka in July 2022, Wickremesinghe has maintained the leadership of the United National Party (UNP) despite various challenges. He previously served multiple terms as Prime Minister.
