London’s Historic Somerset House Faces Devastating Fire

A massive fire at Somerset House, formerly home to the Royal Navy and now a cultural center, required 125 firefighters to bring under control. Operations continue as investigations into the cause commence.

A massive fire broke out at London's historic Somerset House on Saturday, demanding the efforts of 125 firefighters to contain it, CNN reported, citing the London Fire Brigade. Smoke was visible over central London, rising from the building's roof. Firefighters utilized a crane to combat the blaze.

Once home to the Royal Navy and currently serving as a cultural center, Somerset House also hosts Vincent Van Gogh’s self-portrait with a bandaged ear in its gallery. According to a CNN report, the London Fire Brigade declared, 'The fire at #SomersetHouse is now under control and investigations into the cause will begin. Crews will remain on scene into tomorrow, carrying out further operations.'

Around 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines were mobilized to Somerset House, stated the London Fire Brigade. The cause remains undetermined, and Somerset House has been closed to the public. Firefighters fought flames on part of the building’s roof, using two 32-meter ladders, according to the statement.

The fire brigade was alerted just before midday, and the fire was brought under control before 7 pm local time, as per CNN. Assistant Commissioner Keeley Foster said, 'Crews carried out a complex & technical response, creating fire breaks in the roof to limit the spread of flames. We're now extinguishing the final pockets of fire.'

Originally constructed in the 1500s and reconstructed in the 1700s, Somerset House is a venue for creative events and exhibitions. It houses the Courtauld Gallery, featuring works by Manet, Van Gogh, and Monet. Kings College London’s school of law is situated in its east wing. The complex appears in films and TV shows like 'Downton Abbey,' 'Love Actually,' and 'X Men: First Class,' the report added.

A dance battle was scheduled in its open-air courtyard on Saturday, featuring showcases, workshops, live DJs, and a head-to-head dance battle, CNN reported. Somerset House stated that all staff and the public are safe and the site is closed. It added, 'The London Fire Brigade arrived swiftly and we're working closely with them to control the spread of the fire.' (ANI)
