Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently serving time in jail, has applied to become the next chancellor of Oxford University, as announced by his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on Monday. Khan, an Oxford alumnus, 'formally submitted' his application through spokesman Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari.
The PTI shared on social media that Khan, despite being unlawfully incarcerated for over a year, remains dedicated to his principles. 'Pakistan's national hero and Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, founder of PTI and an alumnus of Oxford University, is running for the position of Chancellor of Oxford University,' the post read. Zulfi Bukhari confirmed the formal submission of Khan's application.
This development follows Chris Patten's announcement in February that he would step down as Oxford chancellor. The official list of candidates won't be public until October, and the election is set for the end of that month. Khan, who graduated in 1975, has had a notable past including serving as chancellor of the University of Bradford and a cricketing career. He was recently sentenced to a year in jail on various charges he claims are politically motivated.
