The Associated Press has initiated legal proceedings against three Trump administration officials after AP reporters were barred from attending President Donald Trump's events in the Oval Office and on Air Force One, as reported by CNN. This lawsuit, filed in federal court, accuses the administration of infringing on press freedom, protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The Associated Press also claims that this ban violates the Fifth Amendment's due process clause by unfairly depriving them of their liberty.

In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on Friday, AP is seeking an emergency hearing to have the ban declared unconstitutional, requiring its immediate rescission. The case has been assigned to Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee, to handle these proceedings.

The exclusion of AP reporters was attributed to their continued reference to the 'Gulf of Mexico' in defiance of Donald Trump's recent decision to rename it the 'Gulf of America.' During a press briefing, which AP was not allowed to attend, President Trump stated, 'The Associated Press just refuses to go with what the law is and what has taken place; it's called the 'Gulf of America' now.'

The AP's complaint argues that, 'The press and all people in the United States have the right to choose their own words and not be retaliated against by the government.' The complaint further emphasizes that government control and retaliation over speech are threats to American freedoms, according to their attorneys.

Previously, President Trump announced in January that the Gulf of Mexico would be officially renamed the Gulf of America for government purposes. Though this change is recognized within the U.S., it has not been acknowledged by other nations, and the Associated Press, alongside other global news agencies, continues to refer to the body of water as the Gulf of Mexico.
