In a resolute stance for the rule of law, a lawyers' convention held on Saturday voiced strong opposition to the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments, advocating for renewed dedication to the Constitution's supremacy and judicial independence, as reported by Dawn. Spearheaded by the Lahore High Court Bar Association and the Lahore Bar Association, the gathering culminated in a resolution encompassing numerous demands and criticisms.
Currently led by the professional group of Hamid Khan, these bar associations rebuffed the amendments in their resolution, denouncing them as measures that 'defaced the constitution' and deteriorated the judiciary's role in Pakistan. Additionally, the resolution took a firm stand against the proposed Federal Constitutional Court, branding it unconstitutional and detrimental to the judiciary's integrity.
The event's resolution also criticized the press conference by the ISPR DG on December 5 for its contentious remarks against political figures like Imran Khan. It underscored the demand for immediate release of political detainees, highlighting violations of their fundamental rights. The convention further advocated for biometric-based elections to curb electoral malpractices and rejected the Punjab Protection of Property Ordinance 2025 as unconstitutional.
