India-EU Inks Historic Free Trade Agreement
India and the European Union have concluded a significant free trade agreement, hailed as the 'Mother of all Deals', marking a historic moment in bilateral relations. In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in delegate-level consultations with European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Luis Santos da Costa at Hyderabad House. The Indian side was represented by key figures including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
The European delegation, led by Von Der Leyen and Da Costa, included EU Vice President Kaja Kallas and Trade Commissioner Marcos Sefcovic. The EU lauded the newly established free trade agreement with India, deemed the 'Mother of all Deals', which aims to foster mutual economic growth across both territories.
Acknowledging the deal, Von Der Leyen expressed on X, "Europe and India are making history today." The agreement, which creates a free trade zone for two billion people, is expected to serve as the foundation for enhanced strategic relations. Commerce Minister Goyal praised the agreement as a formidable global partnership.
During their visit, EU leaders paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat by laying wreaths in his honor and further participating in the 16th India-EU Summit alongside Prime Minister Modi. European leaders, including Council President Costa, reflected on Gandhi's enduring message of peace and justice.
Modi, addressing the India Energy Week 2026, reiterated the deal's significance as a landmark alliance between two of the world's largest economies. He emphasized that the agreement would enhance existing trade relations with the UK and EFTA, bolster industrial stakeholders, and augment India's global investment appeal.
