Since the beginning of 2026, the Indian Consulate in Shanghai has been instrumental in enhancing ties between India and the cities of eastern China, spearheaded by Consul General Shri Pratik Mathur. A comprehensive program of engagements has been executed with local authorities, industry leaders, think tanks, and international partners, significantly strengthening educational, cultural, and business connections.

Notably, in Shanghai, Consul General Mathur met Mayor Gong Zheng during the SCO Cooperation Center inauguration for Metabolic Diseases. These discussions furthered the positive momentum derived from the SCO Summit in Tianjin and the revival of direct air links, focusing on amplifying bilateral and multilateral cooperation through the SCO and BRICS with an emphasis on connectivity and people-to-people bonds.

Further highlights include meetings with Ningbo's and Shaoxing's Foreign Affairs Offices, emphasizing the historic and ongoing contributions of the Indian community to local economies and cultural exchanges. A parallel focus was placed on strategic sectors such as agriculture, aviation, and technology, where India's role in sustainable development and global collaboration was spotlighted. Cultural diplomacy also featured prominently, with initiatives like supporting Indian cinema in China and fostering academic exchanges contributing to the broad spectrum of diplomatic efforts.
