The U.S. Space Force has enlisted SpaceX with a $2.29 billion contract to forge a secure satellite communications infrastructure. This network is set to interconnect military sensors and weapons platforms globally, as disclosed by the service on Tuesday.

The fixed-price agreement pertains to the Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone, a cutting-edge framework providing robust, low-latency data transport, essential for military operations. Space Force targets a fully operational prototype by late 2027, integrating missile warning data with real-time interception capabilities, pivotal to previous administration initiatives on missile defense.

A proliferated low Earth orbit satellite array, the SDN Backbone will enhance global communication services. The Pentagon reports it will collaborate with the Space Development Agency's Transport Layer, ensuring vital data transport for present and future defense missions. Additional contractors for further network development will be identified over the summer.
