The leader of the main conservative group in the European Parliament, who has threatened to expel Hungary's ruling Fidesz party, welcomed an announcement by Budapest on Thursday that it would replace anti-EU billboards.

Manfred Weber had said this week that the European People's Party would expel Fidesz unless it apologised for its anti-EU rhetoric, including billboards denouncing European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker. Budapest said on Thursday the billboards would be replaced next week by others promoting Prime Minister Viktor Orban's calls to increase Hungary's birth rate. "It is a good signal, taking down the posters there, that was one of the requests I made this week," Weber said.
