A CBI court in Puducherry on Tuesday convicted five people, including two police officials, in an insurance fraud case, the investigating agency said.

Special Judge for CBI cases P Dhanabal, convicting the five people, sentenced three of them to one year of rigorous imprisonment and two others to six months in prison, a press release from the agency said.

The CBI said its Anti-Corruption Branch in Chennai had registered a case and probed the charges that during the 2003-05 period, the accused persons were involved in filing a false insurance claim, seeking Rs 67 lakh compensation from a private insurance firm, based on 'false' documents.

After an investigation, a charge sheet was filed against the then deputy transport commissioner V Veeraraghavan, traffic police head constable C Kaliaperumal, and sub-inspector S P Sundaramoorthy and two private persons, the release said.

Veeraraghavan, Kaliaperumal, and Sundaramoorthy were sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment while K Muthu Kumar and V Karunakaran were awarded six months in prison, the release added.
