South Korea and the United States will expand joint drills and strengthen cooperation with Japan to better deter and punish any North Korean attack, South Korea's defence minister said after meeting his visiting U.S. counterpart in Seoul on Monday.

Defence Minister Shin Won-sik made the remarks after he signed an updated deterrence strategy with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
