Police in Pakistan's Punjab province have booked a man for allegedly torturing his Indian wife in Lahore, an official said on Wednesday.

''We have registered an FIR against Mirza Yousuf Elahi on the complaint of his Indian wife Farzana Begum for allegedly torturing her, seizing her passport, hurling threats and illegal confinement,'' police officer Muhammad Abbas of the Factory Area police station Shiekhupura Road Lahore told PTI.

He said raids are being conducted to arrest the suspect.

Talking to PTI over the phone, Farzana Begum narrated her ordeal in Pakistan.

Hailing from Cheeta Camp Mumbai, Farzana moved to Abu Dhabi, UAE, in 2006 for a job at a salon. She was earning 5,000 dirhams per month. In 2015, she met Mirza Yousuf Elahi during a get-together with her friends. The same year, both decided to marry. Farzana and Elahi were both divorcees. Farzana had a son and a daughter from her first marriage while Elahi had six children from his first two wives and this was his fourth marriage.

She said she would not go back to India without her children. ''I request the Pakistan government and Indian embassy to take notice of this and recover my passport from Elahi after arresting him,'' she said and also requested the police to provide her protection.
