The South African government has celebrated the conclusion of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, marking the seventh democratic administration in the 30 years of the nation's freedom and democracy. The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) highlighted that these elections exemplify the country's vibrant and dynamic constitutional democracy, reinforcing confidence in the democratic process.
In a statement on Monday, the GCIS extended gratitude to the 16,248,027 citizens who participated in the elections, demonstrating "admirable patience, tolerance, and enthusiasm." The Electoral Commission (IEC) reported a voter turnout of 58.58%.
Electoral Process and Participation
The elections were facilitated under the Electoral Amendment Act 1 of 2023, emphasizing inclusivity and participatory democracy. The completion of the electoral process, from voter registration to vote counting and the official announcement of results, marks a significant milestone. The GCIS noted the "snaking queues" on Voting Day, reminiscent of the first democratic elections, as a testament to the nation's commitment to democracy.
Government commended the IEC for conducting a transparent, peaceful, free, and fair election, ensuring the integrity of the process. With 70 political parties, 11 independent candidates, and 52 national contestants, over 14,903 candidates competed for 887 seats in the National and Provincial Legislatures, reflecting the democratic vibrancy of the country.
Observer Endorsements and Government's Commitment
Various domestic and international observers declared the 2024 elections free and fair, reinforcing confidence in South Africa's electoral processes. The competitive and mature spirit in which the elections were contested was acknowledged by the government, which extended congratulations to all political parties and their upcoming term of public office.
The government also recognized the contributions of citizens, community leaders, election officials, volunteers, and government departments in ensuring a successful election. Law enforcement agencies were commended for maintaining a peaceful and safe environment.
IEC Authority and Post-Election Stability
The GCIS appealed to citizens to respect the IEC's authority and the provisions enabling its mandate. With the election results officially declared free and fair, the government emphasized its commitment to a peaceful and stable South Africa, warning against any attempts to undermine the constitutional order.
Nomonde Mnukwa, GCIS Acting Director-General, hailed the elections as another milestone in South Africa's 30-year journey of freedom and democracy, underscoring the country's dedication to democratic electoral processes. The government also urged the public to avoid sharing misinformation or content that could incite violence.
Parliamentary Transition
The Chief Justice has gazetted the rules for the first sitting of the National Assembly, the National Council of Provinces, and Provincial Legislatures, with the date to be confirmed within 14 days after the election results are declared. The Chief Justice will oversee the election of Parliament's Office Bearers, including the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to providing services to citizens during the parliamentary transition, emphasizing the continuation of stable governance.
