In a concerted effort to combat crime and maintain public safety, Operation Shanela has led to the apprehension of more than 1,200 individuals in the North West province.
A collaborative effort between the South African Police Service (SAPS), other law enforcement agencies, and various stakeholders has resulted in the arrest of 1,278 suspects for a range of offenses between 3rd and 9th June.
The arrests span crimes including rape, murder, assault, robbery, drug possession, and driving under the influence. Additionally, 52 individuals suspected of being undocumented were processed by immigration authorities.
These apprehensions occurred during a series of operations including stop-and-searches, roadblocks, patrols, and visits to licensed premises and second-hand goods dealers. The enforcement actions also led to the closure of 24 illegal liquor outlets/shebeens.
Seizures during the operations included drugs, firearms, ammunition, and other contraband items. The success of Operation Shanela underscores the commitment of law enforcement and community stakeholders to create safer environments.
North West Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended all involved in the ongoing efforts to combat crime and ensure the well-being of communities. Since its launch in May 2023, Operation Shanela has focused on proactive policing strategies, including targeted patrols and compliance inspections, to address various criminal activities in the region.
