Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has issued a directive to the city’s police chief, emphasizing the need for stringent monitoring along the Munak Canal to thwart water theft, as the national capital battles a severe water crisis.

Earlier, Delhi Water Minister Atishi appealed to the LG to deploy a senior police officer to patrol the Munak Canal and curb any illegal water-filling activities. Reports have highlighted that tankers are illicitly siphoning off water from the canal, a crucial supply line from Haryana, exacerbating the crisis.

The Supreme Court has also expressed concern over the water shortage, criticizing the Delhi government for its handling of the issue and warning of potential actions against the tanker mafia if the situation does not improve. The court questioned the inefficiency in pipeline supplies when tankers are functional. The LG's communication underscores the urgency for a strict vigil and legal actions against offenders, with a compliance report due within a week.
