Director General of Police R R Swain has raised alarms over the internet's role in sustaining terrorism and separatism in Jammu and Kashmir. According to Swain, 75% of the region's security challenges are now linked to the virtual world, as Pakistani handlers use online platforms to facilitate infiltration and smuggle weapons.
Swain's comments came during the inauguration of a Cyber Police Station in Jammu. He emphasized the broad scope of cyber crime, which now touches upon other conventional crimes. Swain pointed out that foreign messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram have undermined the sovereignty of licensed telecom service providers, posing a significant security threat.
The DGP revealed that Pakistan-based handlers, through local agents, use cyberspace for planning attacks. As traditional methods like physical meetings and phone calls become obsolete, law enforcement agencies must adapt to new challenges in the virtual world. Swain called for strengthened cyber police operations across all districts in Jammu and Kashmir to tackle this growing threat.
