In a shocking case of fraud, a man allegedly conned a 29-year-old woman from Thane district, Maharashtra, of Rs 59.56 lakh by promising marriage, police revealed on Monday.

The victim, from Khadakpada in Kalyan, detailed in her police complaint that she met the accused last July on a matrimonial site.

According to an official from Khadakpada police station, the man extracted money from her under various pretexts after assuring he would marry her. Furthermore, the victim raised funds from her family and friends and took a loan to meet his demands, which he never repaid. When she sought repayment, he avoided her.

On Saturday, based on her complaint, the police registered an FIR under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust). Investigations are ongoing.
