In a significant legal development, a court on Monday rejected an application from jailed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requesting two additional video conference meetings with his legal team. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja pointed out that Kejriwal is embroiled in approximately 30 litigations nationwide and emphasized his right to a fair trial. Despite this, the judge ruled that there were no new or compelling reasons to deviate from a prior ruling on April 10, 2024, which had also denied this request.
The court noted that the present application mirrored an earlier attempt by Kejriwal's legal counsel, which had been dismissed. Judge Baweja criticized the lack of new arguments or evidence presented to support the need for additional legal consultations. Counsel for Kejriwal was advised to withdraw the application and reapply with fresh grounds, an option which was declined.
In her final remarks, Judge Baweja stated that, given the submissions and the observations made in the April 10 order, there was no justification for allowing the current application. This decision marks another setback for Kejriwal as he navigates numerous legal challenges.
