The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) reports a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in Europe since the Gaza conflict began. A survey showed antisemitism was already high before the conflict, with reports from Jewish organizations indicating a further rise. Many respondents experienced online and offline harassment.
The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has reported a troubling increase in antisemitic incidents across Europe, largely attributed to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The FRA survey conducted between January and June 2023 highlighted that antisemitism was already prevalent before the conflict, and data from 12 Jewish community organizations since October indicates a further rise.
According to the report, Jewish individuals have experienced a surge in antisemitic incidents since October 2023, with some organizations noting an increase exceeding 400%. Three out of four Jewish respondents feel they are held accountable for the Israeli government's actions, and 80% believe antisemitism has escalated in their country over the past five years.
The FRA survey reveals that 90% of respondents had encountered antisemitism online in the year preceding the survey, with over half also facing offline harassment. More than one-third of respondents reported being harassed multiple times due to their origin. Antisemitic harassment and violence predominantly occur in public spaces such as streets, parks, and shops.
The survey also found that over three-quarters of responders conceal their Jewish identity occasionally, and more than one-third avoid attending Jewish events or sites due to safety concerns. The survey was conducted in 13 member states, representing 96% of the EU’s estimated Jewish population.
