Russia Vows Military Response to U.S. Missile Deployment in Germany
Russia plans to counteract the U.S. deployment of long-range missiles in Germany, perceiving it as a direct threat to national security. The U.S. and Germany announced this deployment at a NATO summit, escalating tensions. Moscow views NATO's actions as confrontational, prompting a need for balanced countermeasures.
Russia will act to counter the planned U.S. deployment of long-range missiles in Germany, the Kremlin said on Thursday, regarding NATO's actions as a serious threat to its national security. This announcement follows the U.S. and Germany's decision at a NATO summit to deploy long-range fire capabilities in Germany by 2026, amid ongoing tensions due to Russia's war in Ukraine.
The deployments, including SM-6, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons, aim to bolster NATO and European defense. Additionally, NATO declared a new U.S. air defense base in Poland mission-ready. In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized NATO's expansion towards Russian borders, calling it a source of escalating tensions on the European continent.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has framed its actions as a defensive measure against Western aggression. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov confirmed that Russia anticipated the missile deployment and is preparing countermeasures. President Vladimir Putin has signaled a resumption of intermediate and shorter-range missile production following the U.S. withdrawal from the INF Treaty in 2019.
