In a dramatic turn of events on Saturday, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were acquitted in the un-Islamic marriage case by an Islamabad district court. The ruling nullified the last existing legal hurdle tied to their previous imprisonment.
However, their freedom was short-lived as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) swooped in to arrest the couple yet again, this time for alleged corruption in the Toshakhana gifts case. The NAB accuses them of misusing their power to acquire state gifts improperly.
The Pakistan Tehreek-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Khan, condemned the latest arrest as a tactic to prolong his detention unlawfully. The arrest comes at a significant time, with national elections just around the corner, intensifying the already volatile political landscape in Pakistan.
