Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy on Monday defended the police's decision to open fire on the prime suspect in the Bahujan Samaj Party leader murder case and asserted that all those arrested were the actual culprits.
Regupathy explained that police had no alternative but to shoot at the murder suspect, who tried to attack and escape. 'Police can only shoot at and apprehend those who attempt to flee after attacking them. What other option is there?' he remarked during a brief media interaction.
On July 14, police shot at the suspect K Thiruvengadam when he allegedly fired at them and tried to run after being brought to the location to recover the murder weapons used in the killing of TN BSP chief K Armstrong on July 5. Thiruvengadam later died from his injuries.
The Law Minister reiterated the state government's commitment to curbing criminal activities. Responding to BJP state chief K Annamalai’s concerns about Thiruvengadam's death, Regupathy mentioned that police had obtained CCTV footage showing Thiruvengadam's involvement in Armstrong's murder. 'Only the real culprits have been arrested,' he confirmed.
