A French soldier was stabbed outside a major train station in Paris on Monday, leading to the assailant's arrest, officials reported. The incident comes just 11 days before the 2024 Olympics' opening ceremony.
The soldier sustained a shoulder blade injury but is not in life-threatening condition. The Paris prosecutor's office stated that the motive for the attack remains under investigation. An attempted murder investigation has been launched, with authorities confirming the suspect's identity. Terrorism was not initially suspected, said the national counterterrorism prosecutor’s office.
The incident occurred while the soldier was patrolling as part of the Sentinelle force, a domestic security unit created in response to fatal Islamic extremist attacks in 2015. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin indicated that the assailant was quickly detained.
Security measures in Paris are substantially elevated for the Olympics, with around 30,000 police officers deployed daily, peaking at 45,000 for the opening ceremony on the Seine river. An additional 18,000 military personnel are also aiding in security efforts, housed in a special camp on the outskirts of Paris.
