Cyanide poisoning led to the deaths of six foreigners at a luxury Bangkok hotel, Thai authorities announced on Wednesday. The suspected killer is among the dead. Traces of cyanide were found during autopsies and on drinking glasses and a teapot in the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel room, police and a hospital reported.

Interviews with relatives revealed a dispute over debt related to an investment, with the six deceased of Vietnamese ethnicity, including two U.S. nationals. The U.S. FBI assisted the investigation. Authorities are looking into how the cyanide was obtained.

"We can assume that the six died from cyanide," stated Kornkiat Vongpaisarnsin from Chulalongkorn Hospital, indicating further test results would be available by Friday. The U.S. State Department is monitoring the situation as the probe continues.

Vietnam's foreign ministry confirmed four of the dead were Vietnamese nationals, coordinating with Thai authorities closely. "We hope the victims' families soon overcome this great loss," said spokesperson Pham Thu Hang.

The Grand Hyatt Erawan, operated by Erawan Group with over 350 rooms, is in a prime tourist area known for luxury shopping and dining. Initially reported as a shooting, news of the deaths could negatively impact Thailand's tourism sector, crucial for its economic recovery.

The Thai government is urgently seeking answers, anxious about the impact on tourism, which they expect to draw 35 million foreign visitors this year. Trirong Phiwpan, commander of the Thai police evidence office, indicated drinks in the room were spiked with cyanide by one of the six who then introduced the poison.
