Russia Accuses U.S. of Hindering Prisoner Exchange Talks for WSJ Reporter
Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, has accused the United States of hindering confidential negotiations for a possible prisoner exchange involving Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Gershkovich, arrested on espionage charges, denies the allegations, while the U.S. and the Journal label the trial a sham.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has blamed the United States for potentially derailing confidential prisoner exchange negotiations involving Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Lavrov made these comments at a UN news conference on Wednesday.
Gershkovich, who was arrested on March 29, 2023, in Yekaterinburg on espionage charges, vehemently denies the accusations. Both the Wall Street Journal and the U.S. government have denounced the trial as illegitimate.
Despite Russia previously signaling the potential for a prisoner swap, Lavrov emphasized that any such exchange would only be possible after a verdict. Conviction could lead to a prison sentence of up to 20 years, with Russian courts known for their high conviction rates.
