Netanyahu Nears Hostage Deal Amid Intense Gaza Clashes
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested that a deal securing the release of hostages held in Gaza could be imminent. Israeli forces continue their offensive in Gaza, ordering civilians to evacuate amid airstrikes. Negotiations on the deal, including prisoner exchanges, are expected to resume soon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed families of hostages in Gaza that a deal to secure their release could be imminent, his office announced on Tuesday, amid ongoing conflict in the battered Palestinian enclave. Israeli forces intensified their assault in Khan Younis after ordering civilian evacuations due to renewed militant attacks.
Thousands of people have been displaced, seeking safety as Israeli airstrikes continue, according to U.N. officials. Netanyahu, currently in Washington, is expected to meet U.S. President Joe Biden later this week after addressing Congress.
During a meeting in Washington with hostages' families, Netanyahu said, "The conditions (for a deal) are undoubtedly ripening. This is a good sign." Efforts for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Egypt and Qatar and outlined by Biden in May, have gained momentum recently.
