Nigerien Soldiers Face Deadly Clash with Armed Militants
Fifteen Nigerien soldiers were killed and 16 injured in a clash with armed militants. The government reported 21 militants killed and three soldiers missing. The incident highlights the ongoing jihadist threat in Niger and its neighbors—Mali and Burkina Faso—causing high casualties and a severe humanitarian crisis.
Fifteen Nigerien soldiers have been killed and another 16 injured while battling armed militants, Niger's defence ministry said in a statement read out on state television on Tuesday. The military-led government reported that 21 militants were also killed in Monday's clashes between Bankilare and Tera in the Tillaberi region.
Three soldiers were missing, the statement added. Niger, along with its Sahel neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, is on the frontline of the battle against a jihadist threat that has rapidly expanded since 2012 when al Qaeda-linked fighters first captured parts of Mali.
Thousands have been killed and over 3 million displaced, fueling a severe humanitarian crisis in some of the world's poorest nations. Frustration over the inability of authorities to protect civilians has sparked military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger since 2020.
