The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) board has reinstated Zolani Kgosietsile Matthews as the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), in accordance with a recent Labour Court judgment. The court ruled on July 1, 2024, that Matthews's contract, which was terminated by the PRASA board in December 2021, remains valid.

The termination followed an investigation into whether Matthews had deliberately failed to disclose material information regarding his dual citizenship. However, retired judge Robert Nugent later ruled that Matthews should be reinstated with back pay during arbitration proceedings. PRASA subsequently applied to the Labour Court to review Nugent's ruling.

In response to the court's decision, PRASA has announced that it is engaging with Matthews to discuss the implications of the judgment. The organization requested time and space to work through these matters.

"The PRASA Board of Control remains committed to discharging its duties with the utmost diligence," the agency stated on Wednesday, reaffirming its dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities effectively.
