From August 1, anyone caught driving over 130 km/h in Karnataka will face FIRs, a senior traffic police official revealed on Monday. This move aims to tackle the high incidence of fatal accidents in the state, attributed largely to over-speeding, which accounts for 90% of such cases.

Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Road Safety) Alok Kumar highlighted the specifics: On July 25 alone, 155 individuals were recorded exceeding 130 km/h on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) - 281, such speeds are legally deemed rash and dangerous driving.

Kumar noted that the Supreme Court's monitoring committee on road safety had flagged the rampant over-speeding issue, prompting the new enforcement rule. Advanced measures, including speed laser guns and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, will support this initiative across all state roads, not just highways.
