A man, arrested on charges of murdering a 15-year-old girl, was injured in police firing when he allegedly attempted to escape from custody on Monday, a senior official stated.

The incident unfolded in Hajo, Kamrup district, as the suspect was being taken to the crime scene for further investigation.

According to the official, the accused had been arrested on July 26 for the murder that occurred on July 25. Early Monday morning, during the crime scene visit, he pushed a constable and tried to flee.

Although police personnel ordered him to halt, he did not comply, prompting officers to fire a round at his leg, the official reported.

The suspect sustained a bullet injury in his left leg and is now undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
