On July 30, 2024, Shri Puran Kr. Gurung, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, launched the 'A-HELP' (Accredited Agent for Health and Extension of Livestock Production) program at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok. The event was also graced by Smt. Kala Rai, Advisor to the Rural Development Department, as the special guest.
In his address, Shri Gurung emphasized that the A-HELP program will serve as a crucial link between livestock farmers and the Department. He described the initiative as a significant advancement in promoting livestock health, extension services, and women empowerment, which could lead to enhanced livestock productivity and rural development.
Smt. Alka Upadhayaya, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), supported the initiative through a video message. She encouraged A-HELP workers to play an active role in filling existing gaps in extension activities and supporting farmers effectively.
Dr. Sharman Rai, Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Sikkim, welcomed attendees and highlighted the on-ground responsibilities of A-HELP agents. These include disease control, animal tagging, and livestock insurance.
The A-HELP program, introduced by the DAHD, Government of India, leverages the Self-Help Group (SHG) platform of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) to support animal husbandry activities. The initiative has already been successfully implemented in 12 states and union territories, including Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala, and Assam.
During the launch event, specialized A-HELP Kits were distributed to Pashu Sakhis, who will be trained and accredited as A-HELP agents. The event saw participation from over 500 attendees, including progressive farmers and Pashu Sakhis, marking a significant step towards enhancing livestock management and rural livelihoods in Sikkim.
