Hezbollah Commander Killed in Israeli Strike: Escalating Tensions in Lebanon

Senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was confirmed dead on Wednesday following an Israeli airstrike on the outskirts of Beirut. The strike, which occurred at dusk on Tuesday, marked the most severe incident in nearly ten months of ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

According to Israeli military officials, Shukr orchestrated an attack on July 27 that killed a dozen youngsters in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. However, Hezbollah denied their involvement in the Golan Heights attack. The airstrike in Beirut happened hours before the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, raising fears of a potential regional escalation.

Lebanese ministers and lawmakers, including Hezbollah parliamentarian Ali Ammar, condemned the strike and the killing of Haniyeh. Lebanon's cabinet held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, expressing worries that the situation could further deteriorate. Information Minister Ziad Makary announced that Lebanon is against war and will pursue diplomatic efforts to calm tensions.
