The Indian Army has intensified search and rescue operations in Kerala's Wayanad district, where landslides have resulted in over 160 fatalities. More than 80 bodies have been recovered, and nearly 1,000 people have been rescued, according to the Army.
Triggered by extremely heavy rain, the landslides devastated the hilly regions of Wayanad early on Tuesday. The death toll stands at 167, with over 200 injured and 191 people still missing.
The Army set up a Command and Control Centre, led by Maj Gen VT Mathew and Brig Arjun Segan, to coordinate Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts. Troops are actively conducting rescue operations along a six-kilometre stretch in the affected areas. Specialized units, including engineer task forces and medical teams, have been airlifted to provide immediate support.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Naval aviation units are also participating, supplying food, relief materials, and medical aid. Despite challenging weather conditions, all available resources are being deployed to assist the impacted communities.
