Assassination of Hamas Leader Sparks Tensions in the Middle East
Iran's Revolutionary Guards reported that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran by a short-range projectile. The incident has heightened fears of direct conflict between Iran and Israel. Iran blames Israel and the U.S. for Haniyeh's death and vows severe revenge at an appropriate time, place, and manner.
In a statement released on Saturday, Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran by a short-range projectile carrying a warhead of approximately 7 kg. The assassination has exacerbated concerns of escalating conflict between Iran and its arch-enemy Israel, already fueling regional instability due to Israel's war in Gaza and the worsening situation in Lebanon.
The Guards vowed severe revenge for the killing at an 'appropriate time, place, and manner,' placing blame on the 'terrorist Zionist regime' of Israel. The statement by the elite military force also accused the 'criminal U.S. government' of supporting the attack, which Iranian media reported occurred in a northern suburb of Tehran. Haniyeh was subsequently buried on Friday in Qatar, where he had been based.
Both Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of orchestrating the attack mere hours after Haniyeh attended the inauguration of Iran's new president. Meanwhile, Israeli officials have neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the incident.
