German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his Philippine counterpart Gilberto Teodoro announced plans to deepen their military ties, including expanded training and joint projects.

This landmark visit by a German defense minister to Manila marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Teodoro highlighted the Philippines’ intent to modernize its military, potentially sourcing capabilities from Germany in areas like command and control, and technologically advanced equipment.

This strengthening of military ties occurs as Sino-Philippine tensions escalate over South China Sea disputes. The region, a crucial trade route with over $3 trillion in annual ship-borne trade, has seen increased friction, with recent incidents involving accusations of Chinese aggression.
