The Supreme Court's recent ruling, affirming the lieutenant governor's authority to nominate aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), has been warmly welcomed by the BJP's Delhi unit. The decision, which reasserts the LG's longstanding power, has drawn sharp criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for being undemocratic.
At a press conference, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva condemned AAP MP Sanjay Singh's reaction to the verdict, labeling it as reflective of an anarchist mindset. Sachdeva emphasized that the LG's authority in this matter has been an established norm for decades.
The controversy comes on the heels of AAP's significant 2022 electoral victory over the BJP in the MCD elections, securing 134 out of 250 seats. The BJP, which lost its 15-year control over the MCD, continues to grapple with the political dynamics of the capital's civic administration.
