Yahya Sinwar Replaces Ismail Haniyeh as Hamas Leader Amid Gaza Conflict

Hamas has appointed Yahya Sinwar as its new Gaza leader, following the assassination of former political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Sinwar, known as the mastermind behind the October 7 attack on Israel, has been evading assassination attempts since the war began.

The Islamic Resistance Movement announced Sinwar’s appointment in a statement, referring to Haniyeh as a martyr. The news was met with a barrage of rockets from Gaza militants still embroiled in the conflict. A regional diplomat noted that the appointment reinforces Hamas' uncompromising stance, complicating ceasefire negotiations.

Sinwar, who has a history of imprisonment in Israel, commands significant influence within Hamas. Following Haniyeh's assassination, Sinwar's leadership is seen as a direct challenge to Israel, which continues its military campaign. Efforts to reach a ceasefire remain unsuccessful, with mutual accusations from both sides.
