The Kerala government on Thursday formed a task force to assist survivors of the July 30 Wayanad landslides in claiming insurance for their various losses.

Based on the recommendation of the cabinet sub-committee, the special team headed by Revenue Recovery Deputy Collector K. Gopinath has begun functioning, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). The team will ensure that the claim sums are distributed swiftly.

The task force will collaborate with other departments, gather information, and detail the insurance policies held by the victims. Information will be collected from survivors in relief camps or staying with relatives, as well as from government and insurance agencies.

The team will cover vehicle, life, home, crop, pet, and livestock insurance, with the 'lead bank' district manager and officials from the Directorate of Industries and Commerce and the Department of Economics and Statistics also part of the task force.

Tragically, the death toll from the landslides in the Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas has risen to 226, with 138 people still missing as of Wednesday.
