West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday declared that her government will seek the death penalty for those accused in the alleged sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor.

Banerjee emphasized the necessity for the case to be expedited in a fast-track court, following the discovery of the victim's body in a government hospital's seminar hall in north Kolkata. A preliminary autopsy indicated prior sexual abuse.

Expressing solidarity with junior doctors' protests demanding increased security and severe punishment for the accused, Banerjee affirmed that the West Bengal government is open to an investigation by any agency, even the CBI. She called the incident 'gruesome and despicable' and urged doctors to continue providing hospital services during their demonstrations.
