Putin Accuses Ukraine of Boosting Its Position with Major Attack

President Vladimir Putin declared on Monday that Ukraine's most significant assault on Russian territory since the war's inception aimed to strengthen Kyiv's negotiating position ahead of potential peace discussions, as well as to hinder the advance of Russian forces. Ukrainian forces breached the Russian border last Tuesday and rapidly advanced into the western parts of Russia's Kursk region, revealing the frailty of Russian border defences.

In his most detailed public statement on the incursion so far, Putin accused Ukraine of working with Western allies to enhance its position before any possible talks. He questioned the viability of negotiations with an adversary he charged with indiscriminate attacks on Russian civilians and nuclear sites.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in his nightly address on Monday, stated that Ukraine's cross-border attack was a security imperative. The conflict has now extended back into Russia, he noted, as Ukrainian forces continue operations in the Kursk region.
