Mandated by the court, the CBI on Wednesday launched its investigation into the alleged rape-murder of a woman doctor at a state-run hospital, marking the start of a high-profile probe that has gripped the public and political sphere in West Bengal.
Although Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed support for the decision, she accused the opposition CPI(M) and BJP of using the incident to fuel protests aimed at destabilizing her government, drawing parallels with recent student unrest in Bangladesh.
A 25-member CBI team backed by medical and forensic experts began its inquiry, while protests continued to disrupt healthcare services across the state, leaving emergency and outpatient departments in turmoil.
