Police have made significant discoveries of 'bomb-like substances' in multiple locations across Assam, with eight sites identified in Guwahati alone, following threats issued by the banned ULFA (I). This discovery comes after ULFA (I) claimed to have planted bombs at 24 locations intending to execute serial blasts on Independence Day.
An email from the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), sent to media outlets including PTI, stated that the bombs did not detonate due to technical issues. The terror outfit listed 19 precise locations for the bombs, prompting security forces to search the areas and defuse the devices with assistance from central security units, including the Army.
This incident has put a spotlight on the state’s intelligence capabilities, given that ULFA (I) itself had to inform about the bombs despite the state's high alert status. Meanwhile, public memories of the 2008 serial bomb blasts resurfaced, adding to the ongoing tension. Police teams with bomb disposal squads are continuing their investigations and have so far recovered various suspicious articles that are being forensically examined.
