Police in Northern Ireland mandated the evacuation of over 400 homes after discovering a suspected World War II-era bomb. The removal operation, which police say could extend beyond five days, began Sunday. The device was found Friday in Newtownards, County Down, roughly 9 miles (15 kilometres) east of Belfast.
Superintendent Johnston McDowell of the North Down and Ards District stated, “I appreciate the disruption that this has caused, however keeping people safe is paramount and we will not take any risks.” He extended his gratitude to affected residents for their patience.
Barricades have been erected, and authorities have requested drivers to avoid the area. An emergency support center has been established to assist displaced residents.
