Four Bangladeshis were among six people apprehended in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills region, officials stated on Friday.
Based on a tip-off, vigilant BSF personnel detained the four Bangladeshis on Thursday night, along with two suspected touts who allegedly aided their illegal entry into India.
The detainees were identified as Bashir Ahmed, his wife, and two girls, one of whom is his daughter. ''They hail from Cox Bazaar in Bangladesh and were apprehended by a BSF patrolling team in Ratacherra while travelling in an auto-rickshaw along with two touts from Assam,'' Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad informed PTI.
A case has been registered under various sections of the BNS and Foreigners Act, Prasad said, adding that the girls would be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
A BSF officer noted that an investigation has been launched to determine how they managed to cross the border. Since violence erupted in Bangladesh, there have been several attempts by Bangladeshi nationals to enter India through the unfenced sector in Meghalaya, he added. The BSF has heightened patrols along the border to address security concerns.
