Five New Districts Announced in Ladakh

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, aimed at improving governance and prosperity. While the decision was praised, the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance continue to push for statehood and other demands.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Monday the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, increasing the total to seven. The new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—were welcomed as fulfilling long-standing local demands.

The Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, however, continue their peaceful struggle for statehood and the extension of the sixth schedule of the Constitution. Shah explained the new districts aim to bring governance closer to residents, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh. The additions will bring services and opportunities to residents' doorsteps.

Despite the creation of new districts, local leaders like former BJP MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk stressed that the primary demands for autonomous district councils and statehood remain unaddressed. Ladakh's residents continue their push for these changes.
