Former Dutch international Quincy Promes has joined United FC of Dubai while fighting extradition to the Netherlands. He was sentenced to six years in prison in absentia for drug trafficking. Promes, who has 50 caps for the Netherlands, denies all charges and has filed appeals in both cases.
Former Dutch international Quincy Promes is set to continue his football career in the United Arab Emirates with United FC of Dubai, despite facing legal troubles. Currently, he is fighting extradition to the Netherlands after being sentenced to six years in prison in absentia for drug trafficking.
According to a Dutch court, Promes, who boasts 50 caps for the Netherlands, was involved in shipping 1,360kg of cocaine from Brazil through the port of Antwerp to the Netherlands in 2020. Arrested in Dubai in March during a training camp with Russian club Spartak Moscow, Promes now awaits legal outcomes while maintaining his innocence.
Additionally, Promes was sentenced in absentia last year to 18 months in jail for assault related to a 2020 incident where he allegedly stabbed his cousin. He has appealed both verdicts. Amid these legal battles, Promes was released in May under restrictions barring him from leaving the UAE, leading to the termination of his contract with Spartak Moscow in June.
