Judicial Intervention: A Quest to Bring College Student Back to the U.S.
A U.S. judge has mandated the Trump administration to rectify the deportation of student Any Lucia Lopez Belloza to Honduras. The administration, which violated a court order barring her removal, has been given three weeks to issue her a student visa or face contempt charges.
A U.S. judge has given the Trump administration a three-week deadline to correct the errant deportation of Any Lucia Lopez Belloza, a college student sent to Honduras during a homeward journey to Texas for Thanksgiving. The recommendation is to grant her a student visa to rectify the situation.
Judge Richard Stearns, citing the urgent need for justice, stressed that Lopez Belloza's case was riddled with errors. A lawyer for the administration earlier admitted to violating a court order meant to prevent the deportation. The decision signals the potential for contempt charges if unresolved.
The Justice Department has declined to comment. Lopez Belloza, currently in Honduras with her grandparents, awaits resolution. Her lawyer continues to negotiate a solution for her return to study at Babson College, Massachusetts, after her surprising detention and deportation in November.
