Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday confirmed the imminent formation of department-related standing committees and consultative committees of Parliament.
His confirmation comes amid opposition leaders' concerns over delays in constituting these critical oversight bodies, which evaluate the functioning of various Union ministries.
Speaking at a ministry event, Rijiju clarified that historically, these committees are formed around mid-September and there has been no delay. The Lok Sabha Secretariat primarily oversees these committees, although some fall under the Rajya Sabha.
Department-related standing committees play a pivotal role in scrutinizing budgetary allocations and proposed legislation, offering vital recommendations for policies and new bills. Consultative committees, headed by respective ministry ministers, address issues specific to those ministries.
