Two individuals, Rakesh Singh (26) and Sachin Sangwan (25), have been arrested for allegedly deceiving people by posing as crime branch officials. This 'digital arrest' scam involved the duo posing as law enforcement officers and threatening victims with arrest through video calls over fake international parcels.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Rohit Meena, the accused conned a victim, Saurabh Pillay, out of Rs 4.95 lakh. Pillay received a call from someone claiming to be from an international courier company, informing him about a suspicious package. The call was transferred to supposed crime branch officers who then extorted money from Pillay, citing an arrest warrant.
Meena disclosed that Singh and Sangwan are already in judicial custody at Tihar jail for another cyber cheating case. A production warrant was issued, and they were re-arrested on September 17. Further investigation into the scam is ongoing.
